Add in the times he was taking a stab at the pot with Ax and river is checked thru, and I think this is OK.

I agree with this. First I would have bet more on the flop and checked the turn. If i sensed weakness I might even check raise if I thought he could lay down a flush and/or wasn't pot committed. He might check behing too, you never know.
