Pre-flop, when you have a strong hand and there is a raise ahead of you, if the initial raiser had a decent stack then the rule of thumb is to reraise 3x his initial raise.
The idea is to isolate the initial raiser and play the pot heads up after the flop with you in position.
After the flop your play was fine.
