Default Re: just moved, how to find a good mechanic?

Yes, I live in the East Bay Area. How does that change things? There are sure to be plenty of good mechanics here, and plenty of [censored] ones. Is there a reliable book or website that rates them for me?

OK. The reason I asked is the fact the major cities = choices, and the more likely you are to find an honest shop.

I would suggest the dealership of your make, but they're the highest priced. If you want to use an aftermarket shop, I would suggest a major chain like Goodyear or Firestone. If you go that route, try to find a company owned store, not a franchise or independent.

Since word of mouth is not an option, that's probably your best bet.
