It's certainly a plausible scenario, but the fact that it's so bland makes it, paradoxically, less likely to be true. Why would anyone cover it up? I remember that a big fuss about how they fighters patroling big cities post-9/11, presumably for the purpose of shooting down hijacked airliners.
