Just get it in. If your read was that villain wouldn't call more than another $20, then the paired board shouldn't beat you. If he had two pair or a set, you should've shoved the turn. I prefer leading the turn to a check raise especially if he's passive.
Also preflop is pretty bad in a game with a 25-50BB buy in.
