A couple of points...
He cares about a 6 minute mile because it's a personal goal, and a good one for a recreational runner.
A 6 minute mile is not a big deal and in no way life threatening.
Running invtervals will not get you hurt and injured. It will get you in much better shape. You can do speed workouts 3-5 times a week safely.
