you need to get your visa ASAP. search online for info, some places can get it to you in a few days. You could always go to the chinese embassy in LA and do it yourself instead of paying a visa agent to do it for you.
as for cheap airline tickets to china ... check korean air. tickets are generally pretty expensive now though, so good luck.
