Thats from baseball-reference.com. Thats with his stats this year. He has two years left on his contract like you said. A couple of 35+ homeruns years could really do alot for him. 500 of course is the target number. I think if he had won the MVP award in 2003, and I think he deserved it over A-Rod, it could possibly be a whole different discussion.

All in all, the last few years of his career will determine it, if he stays healthy and continues to belt homeruns, he's in on my ballot. It's a sin though, he's an amazing leader and he does alot of small things that are just not seen by the fan.
