For lower stakes:
Keep at least 300BB for limit games, preferably 500BB (i.e. if you play 2/4 limit hold'em at a casino, you will want at least $1,200 behind). Beware that 2/4 limit in a casino is much much easier than 2/4 online.
If you play NL, you will want to have at least 20 buy-ins for that level if you play it frequently. I.E. if you play 1/2 NL live you will want at least $4,000 behind. Again, online 1/2 is MUCH different than live 1/2.
If you exclusively play MTTs, 50-100x the buy-in s usually recommended. For SNGs, anywhere from 30-100 buy-ins is fine, obviously you need more buy-ins the higher you play to deal with variance.
