As always , there are exceptions to every rule . The general consensus is that you should raise when you're first to act which is often right . Of course , there are situations where it may be correct to limp otb ; if your intention is to re-raise the raiser . For instance , if you're playing against players who frequently punish limpers with a wide range of hands , then it may be more profitable to limp re-raise .This is certainly true against players who would have folded to your button raise a large percentage of the time anyway .

So limping may be fine if :

a) You're playing against players who suffer from the limp-raise syndrome behind you .

b) To create what will certainly be a multi-way pot with speculative hands .
