My opinions:

1. For 9/10 players, I think you need an oval table at least 84" long.

2. I prefer "speed cloth".

3. Use 100% plastic playing cards like Copag. You can easily slide one the length of the table (with speed cloth) when dealing.

4. Get jumbo index cards, they are easier to read from the other end of the table.

5. I personally don't like the wooden racetrack between the rail and the felt. Too much chip ruffling noise, too difficult to lift the card edges, can get sticky, etc.

6. I have found the best drinkholder to be the plastic ones with a tongue that you can anchor by sliding it under the rail near your chipstack.

7. If storage is a concern, the lower end ovals can come in a fold-in-half design with folding legs.

I can't imagine how big an octagon table would have to be to hold 10 players.

Agreed on almost all fronts. I'm not big on the jumbo index cards, but that's a personal preference issue. Your reasoning does make a lot of sense. And as for drink holders, I prefer the cups cut into the rail. If your table allows for the holders you describe, however, those are very nice.
