I think you definitely should have called the cops w/o consulting the victim while keeping your distance from the assailant and you should have told the fuzz what direction the creep was walking in. I'm surprised that none of the previous posts seem to agree w/ me.
As you said, citing your not wanting to wait around is quite selfish.
