BTW, didn't they change the rule in the offseason that even if the whistle is blown, they can overturn? Does that only apply to say they throw a backwards lateral, and its a fumble, and the refs blow the whistle, but the opponent can still pick up the ball and challenge and get the ball if they recover?

Could be wrong, but if the whistle is blown, play is dead everytime. You can't overturn a play in which half of the players stop because the whistle was blown.

The new rule is that you can challenge a recovery, even after the whistle.

Oh ok, but this obviously was not that situation. I wasn't sure about a recovery situation, obviously you cannot count a play that goes on down the field on a return.
