Tough spot. I play 1-2, and call all sorts of hands in position. While I usually get cursed out by the players with over pairs, after my trash turns into treasure. I still think to get stacked with one pair is borderline. That said on a J55 board, I think most get stacked with AA. It would require a read and some background with an opp to make a gut call that he might have a 5.
Did your friend think the guy was stacking off with something like JT? I got to imagine that AJ, would raise the button PF. At foxwoods anything is possible.
