roughly speaking, if you will call his raise (or if you have a somewhat close fold) and if he always bets if you check and never folds a worse hand if you bet, you need to be about 2/3 favorite to choose betting over checking. so no, it's not enough to be a favorite.
also, if he folds some worse hands to your bet, you need to be an even bigger favorite.
you are never this much of a favorite with your 44. you also cannot comfortably fold if he raises.
