No, if you bet then his all in will be like a half pot raise and you will be getting 3:1. Basically here you have to bet for value, and if you bet for value you have to call since you've put in half the effective stacks and it's the turn.

FWIW, my thought process at the time was:
- folding seems unwise (and I don't think the software at this site allows it anyway)
- checking is out of the question
- so, bet...the amount was what I was getting hung up on.

So, thanks all...I understand this situation a lot better now.
