So if the 24" doesn't have them either (which I think is true) you'll need an extension for the audio component so that you can plug it into a stereo or some other audio system.

correct. you either need to have optical in for your computer (which is a little more rare) or just get a cable that will transform RCA to stereo mini (red & white to little headphone jack) and plug it into line-in on your comp.
