(Not too long I promise)
BACKGROUND: Three months ago I get stopped at 10:30 at night for "rolling" through a stop sign.
I was given a ticket for "disobeying a traffic sign or device" for $242.
No kidding, 242 bucks!
So I ask for the trial, and make a case to the judge that the cop was in the lane coming AT me, and he had no angle to see if I had stopped, and that it was 10:30 at night and it was dark.
The judge said he would release his decision by MAIL. I felt good leaving the courtroom.
So this week I get a letter informing me I am "Guilty" and I have to pay $190.
FLASH FORWARD TO TODAY.
I am on vacation, two hours from where I live at a gas station. While I am waiting in line to pay for my sunflower seeds I look back and catch the eyes of that SAME cop who gave me the ticket. (No uniform, he is in a t-shirt and jeans)
He stares at me, then says, "You look familiar, where do I know you from?"
I replied, "You gave me a ticket for supposedly running a stop sign. The judge is making me pay 190 bucks."
"Ouch" was all he said. Then I paid, and walked out.
BEAT: I said nothing cool.
BEAT: It bothered me for the next 100 miles of my trip why I DIDN'T say anything.
BBV, I ask you, if you run into a cop who gave you a ticket later, and he is obviously off duty and out of his jurisdiction, what would have been a cool line I SHOULD have used?
Thanks!
This is what he looked like, kinda. Officer Smith.
