The boom had taken off in the fall of 2003 when Moneymaker's win was aired on ESPN. I remember reading that the expectation for the 2004 WSOP was for 1,000 to 1,500 players in the Main Event. The 2,500+ players blew everyone away and Binion's Horseshoe was a madhouse.
I don't even remember much discussion of the 2003 WSOP on the forums. But, Greg (as a very regular 2+2 poster) got the chip lead early in the 2004 tournament and everyone started paying attention.
Much moreso than when Doug Kim and Hevad Khan final tabled in the past couple years, the whole forum seemed to know Greg. He had been around since the beginning of 2+2 in 1997. It really felt like one of us (just regular ol' players) was playing for the World Championship.
