Not too bad, it only cost you another ~$600 or so to get up the balls to talk to his father when your gut told you that you should originally... For his birthday, give him a payment coupon book for the missing amount spread out over the next few years and let him know that his shame can be let go of if he cleans it up... if you care about him enough to be tough on him.
