My complaint with the lost ball is that pros have the entire gallery and rangers helping them spot balls. Also, I never feel it's right to take a full 5 minutes searching for the ball. Also, I'm really bad at finding balls. I don't know why, but I can have trouble spotting it in the fairway.

If I legitimately think I hit the ball so badly that the ball is lost, I drop and add a stroke. If I know for sure that the ball is just in the grass, but hit badly, then I'll just drop with no penalty, assuming that a ranger would have spotted it easily. Whatever.
