Alzheimer’s attacks microscopic areas of the human brain. The affected areas of the brain cannot be analyzed until after the patient is deceased (Zillmer and Spiers, 2000). Alzheimer’s is a disease of the mind. There is neither a cast nor bandage that can be placed on the patient’s head to will help heal the wounds of the disease. The wounds are hidden far away from physical blow. This is what makes this disease so piercing to the hearts and lives of the families of the patients. The only visible cuts bruises or scrapes of Alzheimer’s are through the actions, feelings and thoughts expressed by the afflicted. A person of sound physical body is no match for the plaques and tangles of Alzheimer’s. The brain, while tucked away from the rest of the world deep within a skull of bone and flesh, has no defenses to the degrading nature of Alzheimer’s disease.
