Default a quick question about \"keeping the pot small\"

In DS's TPFAP he has a section entitled "keeping the pot small". Therein, he makes a rather cryptic remark in an otherwise straightforward paragraph. I quote:

"An extra raise by you makes the pot bigger, which in turn forces everyone to stay in longer. You might have to take cards off that you would not have had if the pot had been smaller. This increases your volatility" (p.46).

Maybe I'm just simple, but what in god's name does the bolded text mean? Thanks in advance for clarification.
