Not sure where this thread could go other than LoL, but he was great. He was on Conan maybe 1-2 years ago and was hilarious, probably mostly due to Conan making fun of him.
I'd say that the US microbrew explosion helped him more than vice versa, but there's no arguing that he wrote insightfully about beer long before it was popular or profitable to do so.
