Bruins star taken from game on stretcher

Patrice Bergeron

Young Bruins star Patrice Bergeron was wheeled from BankNorth Garden on a stretcher today after Randy Jones of the Philadelphia Flyers slammed him into the boards from behind.

Bergeron was motionless on the ice for more than 10 minutes, as his dismayed teammates and the Garden fans looked on. He lost consciousness and did not appear to regain it as he was taken to an ambulance and he did not appear to be conscious.

Jones was called for a five-minute major for boarding.

Although just 22, Bergeron is in his fourth season in the NHL. The center has 72 goals in 238 games over his career, and last year signed a $23.75 million, five-year contract.

His parents, who lives in Quebec, were in Boston for the game and went withn him to Massachusetts General Hospital.
