We don't know alot of things but....First I am suprised it is difficult to find a job paying less than 9 bucks an hour.
Move to the West Coast of Canada and you will find a job in a day paying 9 an hour. Maybe not realistic depending on where you are from but the point is you are young enough( I think) to move to places where you and your wife-to-be can find good employment.
Second if you want good benefits then you could consider a larger company. A couple that come to mind are Starbucks, Staples, Home Depot, Walmart....or why not start apprentcing for a trade. Retail is not for everyone but it sounds like it would be an improvement for you. Get a good resume and you will find something decent I would expect.
