Default A son lost in Iraq

One of my favorite critics of US militarism and empire is Andrew Bacevich, a former career officer and Vietnam vet who now teaches history at Boston U.

I was shocked to learn minutes ago that his son, 1st Lt. Andrew Jr., was killed Sunday by an IED. Article.

Bacevich writes in a very reserved, understated style, but it is clear he is bitterly opposed to empire. He writes in the tradition of Eisenhower's farewell address about the military-industrial complex.

I take this opportunity to encourage people to check out his books. They come from an insider who knows of which he speaks.

The New American Militarism: How Americans are Seduced by War.

American Empire: The Realities and Consequences of U.S. Diplomacy.

The Imperial Tense: Prospects and Problems of American Empire.

The Long War: A New History of U.S. National Security Policy Since World War II.

Empire As a Way of Life: An Essay on the Causes and Character of America's Present Predicament Along With a Few Thoughts About and Alternative, by William Appleman Williams, introduction by Andrew Bacevich.

More news and blog links:

Andrew Bacevich, professor of International Relations at Boston University, has a long list of publications supporting his self-label of conservative, but he became disillusioned by what he viewed as an overreliance on military power driving foreign policy choices by "conservative" neocons of the Bush Administration.
