For the little I've read Stephen Lawhead is good (the first one I picked up was the first book of his retelling of Robin Hood as a Welshman fighting off the English shortly post Norman invasion.)

I should amend to state that Lawhead is quasi-historical fiction with varying degrees of mysticism/supernaturlness thrown in.
