BackStreet Boys came pretty close in other countries. The hotel they stayed at in South America (Brazil, I think) was beseiged by fans even though they made great efforts to keep their stay private, police and riot control had to be called in and they even asked the BSB to request that all the fans go home or they would be arrested or something like that. Their tour bus was almost turned over as they left.

But the problem is simply due to the mass communication we have currently. Music doesn't make Massive breaks in style and leaps of progression because anytime something remotely different is made it's broadcast around the world, so instead of being amazed at something completely different we are introduced step by step towards the rapid progression of new sound.
