The legality of taping your own conversations without the other party knowing varies from state to state in the US. We all know Maryland is one state that it is illegal in because of Linda Tripp. It depends on where you live.

It is not illegal to tape your own telephone conversations for you own purposes, but in some states the tapes can not be used as evidence in court unless both parties know the conversation is being recorded. Wire tapping laws only apply if neither party knows the conversataion is being taped.
