She said going to get donuts distracted her from her daily routine. The truth is that it was likely making her late so she didn't have time to drop off the kid.

Probable Scenario - She left the kid in the car because she didn't have time and thought she'd just go out and take the kid to day care later or get her. Got caught in meetings and forgot about it. As you said how can you backup an SUV, etc and not notice the kid?

IME, in cases like the person is almost always not telling the whole truth.
