Default Who are the human peacocks?

Suzzer99 said this in the female masturbation thread:

Yeah. Not to always bring everything back to evolutionary instincts, but I think it has to do with the fact that in our species, women play the role of the male peacocks strutting their stuff. For the whole system to work, males have to have visual cues affect us at some deep, powerful level that overrides rational thought.

I read this and was really surprised. I don't agree at all about women playing the role of the male peacocks in our society.

I can understand why it looks that way on the surface, but it's always seemed very clear to me at bars, parties, or in fact, any kind of group male/females together, that it is the men doing the strutting. It's not a pure visual display a la the peacock, but it has always felt to me that the guys are the ones attempting to impress and specifically, "showing off" for the opposite sex.

Obviously, we women try to impress and look good for men too, but at bottom, I still think we are generally the choosers and the men are usually the performers.

I'd be really interested to hear opinions on this.
