Working as an assistant in the industry will definitely prepare you for the real deal. I gave up years ago on reading scripts and trying to help wannabes who had no previous connection with the industry. They all thought you just slap down some [censored] on paper, [censored] the grammar, spelling and punctuation, give it to someone, and a check for high six came by return mail, along with a beach house in Malibu, hot car du jour, and Jessica Alba.

I'm sure you've already discovered that ain't how it works.

Good luck, and try to make some bank before you get old and put out to pasture like the rest of us.

Yep. Being on the other side, working for a production company, is extremely valuable in many ways. It can also be encouraging, because you see that a fair amount of crap gets made, and although you can't just be slightly better than crap and break in, there is room for talented, persistent new writers.

The age thing does suck. But I have at least a decade of prime real estate left. And I can always say "F it" and do something else.

Just for any wannabes who might be lurking...
