Yeah I would 3-bet but I would never lead so it is a moot point. That said there is merit to the way you played it eventhough it figures to basically always be -EV in this case. Lead/calling is bad unless you are planning on lead/reraising the turn but let's not adress that here. Lead/3-betting is a legit play though it doesn't figure to work with just top pair unless the guy is a complete LAG or will fold AA-QQ (not gonna happen).
I would check/call the flop.
