Default freeroll question

This is not a thinly veiled brag, I swear.

So I played in a tourney series on Full Tilt where the top 16 and the second 16 overall were entered into a freeroll.

One of the players who made the top 16 is arguing that instead of loading in the top 16 players automagically, that the top 16 should opt to play in the freeroll. (The prize is FTPoints, not money, so shush about MGR shizz.) For some reason, despite the standings saying otherwise, he expects about 6 players to just not be there.

I argue the other way, partially because I'm in the second 16, which is made up of players who were less diligent about participating (I started late - didn't know about it, and missed a week). But I say I would prefer that all 16 players be loaded in automagically, rather than players opting in.

He argues that becaause the prize is set and the number of players doesn't affect it, that there's no advantage to having the players who are not actively playing loaded in.

Who's right?
