when you get there, stay for 6 months, THEN take a northern route back. stray into canada a couple times etc.

Also, if yer gonna go for adventure, ditch the rental car idea and buy a cheapo car. the rule is it can cost no more than the rental car charge woulda been. then, rule is you start off on the journey right away. no test runs, no tweeking. New tires if the ones on it are terminal is permited, but only if there is no discernable tread or there are significant cracks. If yer a nitty sorta guy you can change the oil.
