A.C. arrests raise new call for legal sports betting

Prosecutors considered the suspects accused this month of running an illegal sports-betting operation out of Atlantic City's premier casino especially brazen.

But taking millions of dollars in illegal bets while sitting in the high-stakes poker room of the Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa could be seen as a good marketing gambit.

The bookies simply went where the gamblers were - and they offered a service the casinos couldn't.

"This would not happen in Las Vegas," said William Thompson, a University of Nevada-Las Vegas professor who researches gambling.
