There are some countries where, if you want to enter only on your passport (or on a tourist visa, for countries that require tourist visas), you have to prove that you have a return ticket out of the country. This is to discourage people entering as "tourists" and then not leaving.

My understanding is that airlines are on the hook for paying for the ticket out of the country if they fly someone in who doesn't have a return ticket.
