I remember perusing a Nintendo Power magazine like 10 years after the original Zelda came out and it was still being ranked top 3. That was after a few years where it had cooled off. I remember being amazed at how high it was rated. It is a great game, though.

It's amazing the leap from, say, Atari to Nintendo. I mean by 1987..within the first year or so, Nintendo had games such as SMB, Metroid, Double Dribble, Zelda, and Tyson's Punch-Out. When we got the Nintendo we boxed our Atari up and put it in the closet for years without playing it again. Eventually we gave it and all our games to my cousin for a birthday present. lol.
