I picked up a programmed textbook on organic chemistry the other day and was reminded how effective this method is for certain subjects.
For those that don't know, this kind of book is usually divided into "frames". You read one frame and answer a multiple choice question at the end. You are directed to a different frame depending on your answer and if you get it wrong, you are corrected before you are returned to the main thread.
Ed Miller did a series of popular poker problems using this approach. These are still available on his site at

I did a search on Amazon and in my college library catalog, but found very few current books (on any topic) using this technique. Most of the books I found dated from the '70s. So it seems the method fell out of favor about that time. Why?
