Im an Australian citizen so can work as much as I like. My friend from India has a 20 hour per week max work visa.

This is pretty standard.
The default visa work limits are:
Tourist: None
Working holiday: Unlimited (max 3 or 6 months with one employer)
Student: 20 hours per week
