It really looks like villain has garbage here (T9,88,77,AK,AQ, etc). I think you're lucky to get one street of value here, and I think that is best accomplished by checking the turn as you did. And not that it matters, but it saves you some $ if he is slowplaying 78 99 66.
I can certainly see the argument for bet bet bet, and I'd probably take that line too depending on my read.
