Pressing the buttons on the front control panel makes the screen flicker like it does when the channel changes (so I don't think the contacts are faulty) but the channel doesn't actually change from AUX.

Yes; my universal remote works fine for power/volume but auto-switches to the cable box when I press the channel buttons.

Yeah, true. There was a note on it saying it worked fine but maybe they just meant "...for a 10yo CRT."
