I was talking about this with a friend and we agreed that the ending that was released was better, in part due to the fact that anything that makes you feel sympathetic towards Cartman kind of takes away from his role in the show.

Hmmmmm....I find myself always pulling for Cartman to achieve his goals. Am I the only one?
