I second the Rolex Daytona, Submariner, or Sea Dweller stuff. In any case, definitely go classic collectible rather than new/shiny/splashy/trendy.
Go to the most reputable watch place in town that sells high-end used stuff. A killer watch doesn't actually cost in the end -- it will retain most of its value if you buy it right! Sometimes you can even make a few bucks. I paid 3k for my first Daytona. Ended up selling it back to the same shop 3 years later for 5.5k (they got more popular in the meantime.)
What you want is the watch that will get you out of a jam and return 90% of its value within 48hours if you're stuck somewhere out of cash. Nothing does that quite as well as a Rolex.
1k watches generally don't fit this bill(there are exceptions), but the ones that are 3k+ do...
