The floor got it wrong. Here is an excerpt from one set of rules that covers this situation, your situation is a lot like one of the examples used to clarify the rule. Basically if there is a gross misunderstanding as to the amount of the bet the player can correct his action.

The dealer says, “He bet four hundred.” The caller says, “Oh, I thought he bet a hundred.” In this case, the recommended ruling normally is that the bettor had an obligation to not show the hand when the amount put into the pot was obviously short, and the “call” can be retracted.
