Help me win an argument with the wife!

In Scrabble if I use my letters in such away that I extend a word already on the board as well as making a new word then I get points for both words dont I?

Example: Assume all letters score 1 point. She makes the word CAT and scores 3 points. I then attempt to make the word DOGS as follows

___D
___0
___G
CATS

1. Is this a legal move?
2. How many points do I score?

I say
1. Yes
2. 8 points (4 for dogs and 4 for cats?)

Amirite? Please be pointing me to an offical scrabble rule that backs me up if iamrite?

I had a quick look but couldnt find an offical rule about this online (I didnt look that hard though [img]/images/graemlins/frown.gif[/img] )
