I think people are considering two different types of jackpots. Most jackpots where I have played are Bat Beat Jackpots, where someone has to lose with a big full house or better. Even if a royal is possible, it is certainly very unlikely anyone is going to fold aces full, so the royal shouldn't have to worry.

If it is some sort of high hand jackpot where a hand has to be shown down to win, then checking the royal would make sense. I have rarely played in any rooms with high hand jackpots, and I would have guessed that if there was no showdown, someone with a royal could still flip it over to claim the jackpot, but this might not be the case in all casinos.
