I'll take a stab at a serious answer.
I suspect that a big part of the reason for all the attitude is that poker players tend not to respect the abilities of other players as much as in other activities and sports. Yes, we all talk about poker being a game of skill and skill is certainly a part of it, but there's an undercurrent of disrespect for the accomplishments of others in poker. Even with someone who has had incredible results like Aba, a lot of folks secretly can't wait for him to fall on his face, thereby confirming that he's nothing special and that the average guy can accomplish what he has.
Hell, even poker announcers on tv are wisesases who make fun of players at every opportunity - it's just part of the game.
