That's wrong, and they are spinning the facts. If they only count about 20% of the PS3's sold, it would beat HD DVD hardware sales. And blu ray software sales are beating HD DVD 2:1 for the first nine months of the year.

Fact 1: HD-DVD is outselling blu-ray for dedicated players.
Fact 2: There have been more PS3s sold than dedicated HD-DVD players.
These are two distinct facts. Nobody is arguing or trying to 'twist' either of them, except you.
